How to Use Hydrophilic Catheters

What Exactly is a Hydrophilic Catheter?

Hydrophilic catheters are used by people who often experience discomfort or even pain while self-cathing. With any catheter, it is important to be as comfortable as possible. Hydrophilic catheters are designed to be pre-lubricated and comfortable for the user. Another key aspect of these catheters is that they prevent friction that can lead to painful damage to the urethra. There are thousands of patients nationwide who use hydrophilic catheters daily to increase comfort and reduce friction during the self-catheterization process.

How do Hydrophilic Catheters Work?

Hydrophilic catheters are characterized by the pre-lubricated top layer that is stuck to the catheter. This layer attracts water to the catheter, allowing it to glide more smoothly into the urethra. During insertion, the hydrophilic coating continues to attract this water to ensure that it stays lubricated during the entire insertion process.

How Should I Use A Hydrophilic Catheter For The First Time?

Unlike other catheters, hydrophilic catheters must be activated before use. Your hydrophilic catheter will typically contain a sterile saline solution either in a separate foil packet or in the package itself. For catheters that have a foil packet, you will burst the solution packet so that your catheter can activate. First, you should unfold the package, then fold the packet down about halfway. Next, squeeze the packet with your thumb and finger and the solution will begin to release. It is recommended to wait 30 seconds to ensure that the catheter is optimally hydrated with the sterile solution.
